Salcombe Laidback Weekend
Sat - Sun Sept 30th Oct 1st 2017

Hi Fellow Wanderers,

What better way to round off the 2017 season than repeating a memorable event we held some years ago ?

By the end of September the holiday crowds have dispersed, the M5 motorway has become declogged, and the Salcombe Estuary becomes less cluttered with moorings. Overnight accommodation costs begin to fall from their summer peaks. Camping is available at nearby Alston Farm.

This year the weekend starting Friday September 29 through to Monday October 2 provides lunch-time high waters – essential for the event I have in mind.

Access to the water this year will be totally free of charge since the Wanderer Class Association is meeting all such “entry fees”.  (A special deal has been negotiated with Salcombe Harbour Board so that WCOA only has to pay £15 per boat for a space in Batson Creek for both your Wanderer (your car can take its place whilst you are sailing) from Friday night until Monday morning. This fee also includes your Harbour licence – in effect, the licence has been waived since it costs £22.50 no less.)

What will we be doing ?

On Saturday morning after a briefing by the slip at Batson at 10.00am, I will, with John and Jennie Renouf kindly manning their Marlow SC Dory support boat, take you on a Cruise of the Creeks on the flood tide. We then plan to sail back to Fisherman’s Beach, opposite to Salcombe, for a picnic lunch.

In the afternoon, we will watch the Salcombe YC club races start at 2.10pm at 10 minute intervals before we take our places for a special but leisurely Wanderer fleet race starting at 2.40pm. I will conduct a pre-race briefing (please stop sniggering at the back, please) at Fisherman’s Beach. Nothing elaborate I promise you. It will be an ideal opportunity for Wanderers who have not previously raced. We are likely to follow the same course set for Handicap fleet. Salcombe YC normally have three RIB support boats for Saturday afternoon racing. We should be back at Batson around about 4.30pm.

In the evening, I am planning a typical Wanderer Fleet supper at Salcombe YC in its Chart Room with its magnificent views across the estuary. This will be a carvery or similar and cost around £15 a head. Those of you who have been to Salcombe events before will know how incredible value for money this is.

Sunday morning, after a generous lie-in, we will sail out of Batson to the Salcombe YC start line in front of the clubhouse for a trip on the flood tide to Kingsbridge in the form, I guess, of a gentle Passage Race to the Crabshell Inn for a decent Sunday lunch after tying up at the Crabshell’s booms alongside the seawall. After lunch we will slowly drift back to Batson on the ebbing tide.

Of course, everything is subject to the weather……….  If you want any more information please do not hesitate to contact me.
